This photo shows the results of laser engraving on color-anodized aluminum. The laser burns the aluminum oxide to a light grayish-white color, resulting in crisp, high contrasting lettering. 
On top is a blue anodized aluminum bar, below is a 1/32" thick  black anodized ID tag.
